Q: At what point in my pregnancy should I consult a doula?

A: There is no “right” answer for this question. I have met with people as early as 10 weeks, and I have met with people who gave birth a week later. Typically, I start to meet with people at the end of the second trimester, or the beginning of the third, but it is really up to you to decide when you would like your care to begin.

Q: I’m worried I won’t be successful with breastfeeding. Should I meet with you prenatally?

A: Most lactation counseling takes place after delivery. However, prenatally, I can educate you about breastfeeding, and show you best practice. We can also discuss why you think you won’t be successful, and try to squash any unnecessary fears before you get to the delivery room. However, I firmly believe that a good breastfeeding relationship begins with confidence and a can-do attitude, so I am certainly willing to meet with you prenatally.

Q: Are your services covered by insurance?

A: GREAT question! The good folks at DONA International are working tirelessly to come up with our own insurance code. I am willing to provide any information requested by your insurance company to get you a reimbursement, but I cannot guarantee success at this time.

Q: I have just been informed that I need a C-section. Do I still need a doula?

A: Yes! When my clients know they will be having a C-section, I help them to revise their birth plan, answer any questions I can, and act as an advocate to make sure their wishes are heard and understood in the operating room. While I might not be allowed to be in the operating room with you, I can help you mentally prepare pre-op, and help make sure your wishes are heard in recovery. I can also help if you desire skin-to-skin (but may be too weak to handle this on your own), capture photos of you and your partner with your babies, attend to mom’s postpartum needs, and be there for breastfeeding support.

Q: I have no idea where to start with my baby registry, but I still want to be involved with the planning. Can you help me?

A: Yes! I first meet with you to learn about your lifestyle, and then research options best suited for you and your family. I come up with options I believe best complement your lifestyle, and then will either accompany you to the store, or provide with a list of why and how.

Q: I have just been put on bed rest and my partner has a travelling job. How can you help me?

A: My care is different for every client I work with. I will meet with you, and we will discuss your needs together. I have been known to shop, cook, clean, help arrange child care, help pack hospital bags…really anything you need we can come up with a solution together.

Q: I am interested in becoming a doula, are you looking for a partner?

A: I am always looking for a good back-up doula! Please email me at mcmaternity@gmail.com or call me at 508-212-6624.

Q: I am having twins, do you have experience with multiples?

A: I do! And, if you are out of my area, I know other multiple experts as well.
